New Resource Datasets

We've overhauled our backend, moving to Neo4j and AWS, which has boosted performance and reduced compute overheads. This update includes new, expanded and updated datasets, enhanced data cleanliness, and new capabilities for gene properties and relationships. Our infrastructure improvements also set the stage for integrating user-specific data for on-site deployments.

Enhanced Performance and New Capabilities with Neo4j & AWS
We've made a significant upgrade by transitioning our KnetMiner resource backend to Neo4j, using the Cypher query language for data retrieval during API calls. This shift has given us serious performance improvements and reduced our compute requirements for managing our large knowledge graphs. Alongside these changes, we’ve developed several new datasets, such as Plants Lite, Vegetables Premium and Brassicaceae Premium, and made significant enhancements to our ETL pipeline for better data cleanliness.
New Resource Bundles
We’re happy to announce four new Resource bundles: Plants Lite, Fungi Lite, Brassicaceae Premium and Vegetables Premium. These new bundles are all up to date with the most recent research and publication data from early-2025, and the premium versions contain six and ten species, respectively. We’ve continued to expand on the data available in our graphs, adding new sources while developing new bundles. We even fine-tuned how we set the preferred and alternative names for genes and proteins to better match what you may expect.

Exciting things on the horizon

This transition to Neo4j not only enhances our API performance but also opens up new possibilities for integrating user-specific data for on-site deployments (although this is still a work in progress - stay tuned!). With our entire stack now moved to AWS and set up using Infrastructure as Code, we've partnered closely with AWS to follow best practices. This collaboration ensures a robust, scalable, and secure environment, making it now much easier to tailor KnetMiner to the specific needs of different user groups and projects.
